What is Prometrium (Progesterone) used for? Prometrium (Progesterone) is a type of female hormone called progestin. It is similar to the progesterone that your body naturally makes and is given to replace the hormone when your body is not making enough of it. Prometrium is used to restore normal menstrual periods that have stopped for several months (amenorrhea). Prometrium is also used as part of combination hormone replacement therapy with estrogens to reduce menopause symptoms such as hot flashes. Progesterone is added to estrogen replacement therapy to reduce the risk of cancer of the uterus. How should I use Prometrium (Progesterone)? Prometrium is not for use in children. Prevention of Endometrial Hyperplasia: Treatment of Secondary Amenorrhea: Some women may experience difficulty swallowing Prometrium capsules. For these women, Prometrium capsules should be taken with a glass of water while in the standing position. What are the side effects of Prometrium (Progesterone)?
Please Note Before taking Prometrium, tell your physician or pharmacist if you are allergic to progesterone. Prometrium should not be used if you have certain medical conditions. Always consult your physician or pharmacist if you have history of blood clots, history of bleeding in the brain, liver or kidney disease, cancer of the breast or other female organs, vaginal bleeding of unknown cause, a loss of pregnancy with some tissue remaining in the uterus, recent stroke or heart attack. Prometrium may be used during pregnancy only as directed by your physician. This medicine passes into breast milk. Consult your physician before breast-feeding.
