Cytotec (Misoprostol) Tweet
What is Cytotec (Misoprostol) used for? Cytotec (Misoprostol) is used in the treatment of gastro-intestinal ulcers including stomach (gastric) and duodenal ulcers and ulcer caused by a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Misoprostol mimicks the action of prostaglandin E1 in the body. One of the adverse effects of NSAIDs is stomach and duodenal ulcers (gastro-intestinal ulceration). Unfortunately misoprostol also mimicks the labour-inducing effects of prostaglandin E1. Therefore women who are pregnant or who may become pregnant should avoid taking misoprostol as it may cause contractions of the uterus. How should I use Cytotec (Misoprostol)? The recommended dose of Cytotec for reducing the risk of NSAID-induced gastric ulcers is 200mcg, 4 times a day. Cytotec should be taken with food. If this dose cannot be tolerated, a dose of 100mcg can be used. Cytotec should be taken for the duration of NSAID therapy as prescribed by the your doctor. Adjustment of the dosing schedule in renally impaired patients is not routinely needed, but dosage can be reduced if the 200-mcg dose is not tolerated. What are the side effects of Cytotec (Misoprostol)?
