Efudix

Efudix (Fluorouracil) commonly is used to treat the early signs of skin cancer (actinic keratoses) which usually appears in the face, forearms and neck. Therefore it is an anti-cancer drug which is designed in the form of a cream. The drug belongs to the drugs that are called cytotoxic antimetabolites. It works by interfering with the growth of abnormal cells which are eventually destroyed. This medicine has been accepted to be a highly effective item in slowing down this process. Further Efudix is an established wrinkle eraser, which supports the patient’s skin in looking younger. Ever since Efudix has a reputation for its anti-ageing properties.

Dosage & Administration Information:

Administer a thin layer of Efudix- Cream over your affected area. Be aware that the entire area of the skin being treated should not exceed the size of 500cm². Also larger areas should be always treated in stages. Generally a dressing is not needed, when you have a solar and/ or senile keratoses. Although other conditions like the keratosis palmaris, may need a tight dressing. Usually a therapy with Efudix takes 3-4 weeks.

How does Efudix works:

The active agent of Efudix, Fluorouracil, belongs to the group of anti-cancer medicines which are also known under the name 'cytotoxic antimetabolites'. Cancer develops due to uncontrollable and abnormal cell multiplication. Then these cells spread and destroy nearby tissues. Fluorouracil is able to slow down these actions by decelerate this process. In conclusion fluorouracil destroys the cancer cells through attachment to a certain chemical inside the cell and thus is preventing it from using vital nutrients and other certain substances required for normal activity.

Side Effects:

Efudix is usually well tolerated. But as specified below and like it is with any other drug, there are certain side effects aligned with Efudix. Some people may experience those, others will not be effected by any of the following symptoms.
In case you do observe any adverse reactions, please do not hesitate to consult a doctor, since some of these side effects need medical assistance.

• Photosensitivity 
• Burning
• Hyperpigmentation
• Itching
• Change in skin pigmentation
• Burning
• Nausea and vomiting
• Diarrhoea
• Proctitis
• Oesophagitis
• Stomatitis (sore, red, ulcerated oral cavity)

The possibility of decreased blood cells may result in:

• Fever
• Blood noses
• Infections
• Bruising
• Tiredness
• Weakness
• Hair loss
• Abdominal

Precautions:

Please do not take the application of Efudix into consideration if you are allergic to the active agent fluorouracil. If you are a victim of an allergic reaction you may witness the following symptoms

• Swelling of the face
• Swelling of the lips
• Swelling of the tongue
• Wheezing
• Difficulty with breathing
• Rash
• Itching or hives on the skin

Beyond that it is highly advised not to apply the cream on inflamed, sunburned or windburned skin parts.

Further Advice:

Avoid letting Efudix get into contact with the eyes, since Efudix is highly irritating to sensitive skin and eyes. Moreover, during a Fluorouracil- treatment do avoid the usage of cosmetics on the treated area (discuss with your doctor)

Note: Your appearance might look unattractive for the time of the course of the treatment.

Pregnancy and Lactation

The Application of Efudix during pregnancy and during the lactation period is not recommended!
