How does Advantan Ointment (Methylprednisolone Aceponate) work:

Advantan Ointment contains the active ingredient, Methylprednisolone, which belongs to the group of medicines called corticosteroids. The corticosteroid is suitable to put on the skin. It is therefore called a topical corticosteroid.

Advantan Ointment suppresses inflammatory and allergic skin reactions and thus relaxes symptoms like erythema, thickening of the skin, coarseness of the skin surface, edema, itchiness, burning sensation or pain. Advantan Ointment is used to treat endogenous eczema, neurodermatitis, eczema in children, contact eczema, or degenerative, dyshidrotic, or vulgar eczema.

Dosage & Administration:

Advantan Ointment should be used only as prescribed by physician. Follow carefully all directions given to you by your physician.

Apply Advantan thinly to the affected area of skin. Use Advantan once a day to treat the affected skin for eczema and twice a day for psoriasis.

Usually, treatment with Advantan is for up to 12 weeks in adults and 4 weeks in children. Excessive application of topical corticosteroids to large areas of the body for prolonged periods of time can increase the risk of side effects. Ask your physician if you are not sure what to do.

Side Effects:

Tell your physician if you notice any of the following and they worry you:

  • itching
  • burning
  • redness

The rare side effects include:

  • thinning of the skin
  • the appearance of fine blood vessels on the skin surface
  • stretch marks
  • acne
  • infection of hair follicles
  • excessive unwanted hair growth
  • perioral dermatitis
  • skin discolouration
  • allergic skin reactions

Precautions:

Advantan Ointment should be used only on the skin.

Tell your physician if you have allergy to Advantan or any of its ingredients. Always discuss with your physician if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, breast-feeding or planning to breastfeed. Tell your physician if you are taking any other medicines, including any that you buy without a prescription from your pharmacy, supermarket or health food shop.
