What is Nitrogesic Ointment (Nitroglyceryl) used for?

Nitrogesic Ointment (Nitroglyceryl) is used to treat pain occurring as a result of anal fissures (tears in the lining of the anus). The active ingredient in this ointment is in a class of drugs known as nitrates . It helps to lower pressure inside the anus and relieve pain by relaxing certain muscles around the blood vessels.

How should I use Nitrogesic Ointment (Nitroglyceryl)?

Nitrogesic Ointment (Nitroglyceryl) is applied directly into the anus, using the finger. You may wear a medical glove or wrap the finger with plastic wrap. To apply the ointment, squeeze out the correct amount onto the finger, and insert the finger into the anus, up as far as the first joint on the finger. You may then spread the ointment around the inside of the anus. This ointment is usually applied every 12 hours, often for up to 3 weeks, or as instructed by your physician. Dispose of the glove or covering and wash your hands after each use.

You may notice some side effects when usingNitrogesic Ointment (Nitroglyceryl), such as headaches after each dose. Some physicians recommend treating headaches with pain relievers.
