How does Clofert work?

Clofert induces ovulation by stimulating the release of two hormones which control the development and release of the egg. These hormones are the follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), and the luteinising hormone (LH). This drug is used commonly in cases of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

Usage:

Clofert is used for the treatment of ovulation dysfunction. Further is are included Patients with:

  • polycystic ovary syndrome
  • amenorrhea-galactorrhea syndrome
  • psychogenic amenorrhea
  • post-oral-contraceptive amenorrhea
  • certain cases of secondary amenorrhea of undetermined etiology

Precautions:

Clofert is recommended only if the following criteria are met:

  • Patient is not pregnant
  • Absence of ovarian cysts and abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Normal liver function present

Clofert is not advocated for those hypersensitive to its ingredients. It is not to be given in cases of:

  • Presence of abnormal uterine bleeding of undetermined etiology
  • Pregnant and lactating females
  • Ovarian cysts or enlargement not due to polycystic ovarian disease
  • Active or past history of liver disease
  • Uncontrolled thyroid or adrenal function, or organic intracranial lesion.

The common adverse reactions to clomifene (Clofert) include:

  • Ovarian enlargement
  • Vasomotor flushes
  • gastrointestinal intolerance
  • Breast discomfort
  • Visual disturbances
  • Headache
  • And abnormal uterine bleeding

Infrequently clomifene (Clofert) use may cause:

  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Appetite and weight changes
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Hair loss / dry hair
  • Urinary complaints
  • Insomnia
  • Light-headedness
  • Nervous tension
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Vertigo

Adult: 50 mg daily for 5 days starting on the 5th day of menstrual cycle or at any time if there is amenorrhoea. If ovulation does not occur, a 2nd course of 100 mg for 5 dats may be used commencing as early as 30 days affer the previous therapy. Further treatment may not be recommended if pregnacy has not occurred after a total of 6 treatment cycles.

There is increased chance of multiple pregnancies when conception occurs in relation to clomifene (Clofert) therapy. In those successfully impregnated, there is increased risk of spontaneous abortion and stillbirth.
