What is TMP (Trimethoprim) used for? TMP (Trimethoprim) contain the active ingredient Trimethoprim, which belongs to a group of medicines known as antibiotics. TMP (Trimethoprim) is used to treat and prevent infections of the urinary tract caused by bacteria. It works by stopping the growth of the bacteria that is causing your infection. How should I use TMP (Trimethoprim)? Your physician will tell you how much TMP you need to take each day. It is important that you take TMP as directed by your physician. Do not take more than the recommended dose. - Adults and Children over 12 years: The usual dose for treating urinary tract infections is 300mg once a day. The usual dose for preventing urinary tract infections is 100mg once a day. - Children under 12 years: The dose will depend on his/her age and weight. - Elderly: The elderly and people with kidney problems may need smaller doses.
