Nizral (Ketoconazole) Tweet
How does Nizral (Ketoconazole) work: Nizral (Ketoconazole) belongs to a class of drugs known as the imidazoles. It is used in the treatment of fungal infections by interfering with their growth and repair mechanisms. Nizral (Ketoconazole) inhibits the production of a chemical called ergosterol, which is a component of the fungal cell wall. Damage to this wall cannot be repaired and this interferes with the cell's ability to reproduce. Ketoconazole is used in the treatment of a number of different types of serious fungal infections, including those of the gut, skin and nails. Some types of hypercalciuria are vitamin D-dependent and, in those cases, drugs that suppress vitamin D can be useful in the diagnosis of the disease and in its treatment, according to experts at the Lorain Kidney Stone Research Center at the Medical College of Ohio. One such drug is Nizral (Ketoconazole), which is normally used as a broad-spectrum anti-fungal drug. However, since it interferes with the synthesis of vitamin D-3 by inhibiting a particular enzyme system, it has specific value in this type of hypercalciuria.
