Avodart (Dutasteride) usually is used to treat men with an enlarged prostate. An enlarged prostate is caused by producing too much of a hormone known as dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
Avodart reduces two enzymes responsible for the conversion of testosterone to DHT, which is a main factor in hair loss. Where f.e. propecia only blocks one of these enzyme, by blocking two

Dosage & Administration Information:
For the treatment of an enlarged prostate one capsule Avodart 0.5 mg is to be taken once daily. As it is advised for any other drug, do never change your dosage on your own. Only do specifically so if your doctor or pharmacist instructs you.
Avodart should be taken at the same time each day. If you cannot take a dosage Avodart as your schedule demands, take the next dose as soon as possible. Do not take a double dose of the medicine. One can apply Avodart with or without food in orally form. In case Avodart causes your stomach an upset, try taking it with food. Do not chew or chrush the capsules, always swallow it whole. However, for that Avodart can work properly, please administer it as prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop taking Avodart without discussing it first with your healthcare provider.
Optimal dosage for hairloss:
For the treatment of hair loss, a daily dose of 2.5mg daily seems to achieve the best results.
How does Avodart works:
Prostate growth is caused by a hormone in the blood called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Dutasteride lowers DHT production in the body, creating a reduction of the enlarged prostate. Prostate usually grows large over a certain period of time. The same is valid for the reduction of the size of a prostate and for the improvement of its symptoms: it will take some time. Some men experience lesser symptoms after 3 months of a Dutasteride treatment. But commonly a period of around 6 months is necessary to observe if Dutasteride will work. Tests have successfully proven that treatment with Avodart over a period of 2 years reduces the need for surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Further is has shown the reduction of the risk of complete blockage of urine flow known as acute urinary retention.

Advodart is designed for the use of men only. Therefore the administration for pregnant or breastfeeding women is not appropriate. Because this medicine may pass into the semen, men whose partner is or may be pregnant should use contraception such as a condom while having intercourse. This is crucial for the avoidance of any possible risk to a developing male baby.
Further Information:
It is known that dutasteride can be absorbed through the skin. Therefore children, women and adolescents should avoid contact with capsules that are seeping. In case contact with seeping capsules is made, immediately wash the contact area with soap and water.
How to store Avodart:
Do not use Avodart after the expiry date. Further keep the medicine out of reach and sigth of children. Dont store the product over 30C.
