What is Atrovent (Ipratropium Bromide)
Atrovent (Ipratropium Bromide) is registered trademark of Boehringer Ingelheim. Generic name is Ipratropium Bromide. This leaflet answers some common questions about Atrovent Nasal Aqueous 0.03% spray solution. It relaxes the muscles around the airways so that they open up for easier breathing. This drug blocks the action of a certain neurotransmitter at sites in the body’s bronchial smooth muscle, causing relaxation of the lung airwats.
Chronic lung disease (CLD) occurs frequently in preterm infants. Bronchodilators have the potential to dilate small airways with muscle hypertrophy and might have a role in the prevention and treatment of CL. A review of the medical literature by British researchers was conducted to evaluate the effect of bronchodilators, given preventively or as treatment for chronic lung disease, on mortality and other complications of preterm births. Initiation of bronchodilator therapy such as ipratropium had to occur within two weeks of birth for prevention of CLD to be effective.
