Tamiflu (Oseltamivir) Tweet
How does Tamiflu (Oseltamivir) work: Tamiflu is an antiviral drug, which blocks the actions of influenza virus types A and B in the body. Tamiflu is designed to treat obvious flu symptoms. But Tamiflu can also be prescribed to prevent influenza. Mainly in patients who may be exposed but do not yet have symptoms. Note that the medication is not indicated to treat a common cold. Tamiflu (oseltamavir phosphate) is an antiviral drug, most often used to treat types A and B influenza. It must be taken within the first two days that the symptoms occur. Tamiflu is a neuraminidase inhibitor. As the flu virus takes hold in the body, it forms new copies of itself and spreads from cell to cell. Neuraminidase inhibitors fight the virus by preventing the release of new copies from infected cells. Although it prevents the virus from spreading throughout the body, it is not a vaccine and cannot replace flu vaccinations. However, Tamiflu helps lesson the severity of symptoms like coughing, congestion, muscle aches, sore throat, etc., and shortens the recovery time by approximately two days. Dosage & Administration: In order to work properly, Tamiflu must be started within two days of the onset of symptoms or exposure to the flu. If you have flu, continue taking it twice a day for five days, even if your symptoms might have improved. The medication will be most effective if you take each dose at the same time each day. To prevent influenza, take Tamiflu once a day for at least ten days (or as directed by your physician). Protection lasts as long as you take the drug. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. Store Tamiflu at room temperature and keep the blister package dry. Try to take Tamiflu with food in order to prevent an upset stomach. Side Effects: As it is with any other medications, Tamiflu may cause certain side effects. In case you should experience the following adverse reaction, please contact you physician for medical assistance:
Precautions: Do not use the drug when you are pregnant or nursing unless you have discussed this with your physician. If you are suffering from any of the following disorders, inform your physician before starting a treatment with Tamiflu:
