Antiviral medications are drugs developed to treat a specific virus. Although they cannot destroy a virus, they can inhibit it from developing and spreading - which in turn reduces the severity of symptoms. The most common antiviral medications that have already been developed are for fighting HIV, influenza types A and B, herpes, and hepatitis types B and C.
